The annual cost, category by category
AAA models ownership cost across six categories at 15,000 miles a year. Four of them are published separately for hybrid and petrol sedans.

Add the four differences above and you get $732 in the hybrid’s favour. The published totals differ by $477. The gap is not an error — it is two categories AAA includes in the total but does not publish separately for hybrid and petrol sedans: licence, registration and taxes, and finance charges. Together they run about $255 against the hybrid, which is what a higher purchase price produces in registration tax and loan interest.
We show the arithmetic rather than quietly presenting four categories as though they explained the whole difference. If a comparison elsewhere shows components that sum neatly to the headline number, check whether every category is accounted for.
Fuel is most of the advantage
The hybrid sedan burns $1,100 of fuel a year against $1,669 for petrol — a saving of $569, or roughly 34 percent.
That single line is larger than the total annual gap, and it is the only category that scales directly with how far you drive. Everything else on the list is broadly fixed. A driver covering half the AAA assumption sees roughly half the fuel saving while the depreciation, insurance and finance differences stay where they are — which is enough to close the gap entirely.
The reverse is also true. At 25,000 miles a year the fuel advantage grows to roughly $950 while the categories running against the hybrid do not move, and the annual saving widens well past $477.
Maintenance is the quieter advantage
Hybrid sedans are modelled at $1,551 a year for maintenance, repair and tyres against $1,786 for petrol — $235 less.
This runs against the common assumption that hybrid systems cost more to keep running. AAA’s category data does not support that for sedans. It also does not explain the difference, and we are not going to invent a reason for it: the study publishes the figure, not the cause.
Insurance: a difference of one dollar
Hybrid sedans are modelled at $1,571 a year for insurance. Petrol sedans: $1,572. The difference is one dollar.
That is worth stating plainly because “hybrids cost more to insure” is repeated widely. At the category level in AAA’s 2025 data, they do not. Individual models vary — a specific hybrid can carry a higher premium than a specific petrol car — but as a category the difference is indistinguishable from zero.
Depreciation runs the other way
The one category where the petrol sedan wins. Hybrids are modelled at $3,535 a year against $3,462 — $73 more.
It is a small figure and it reflects a higher starting price rather than faster value loss in percentage terms. Depreciation is also the least certain line in any ownership-cost model, since it forecasts a resale market several years out.
Where electric sits
For context, AAA models an electric sedan at $13,692 a year — substantially more than either.

The electric sedan’s energy cost is the lowest of the three at $729 a year, and its maintenance is lower than petrol. What moves it well past both is depreciation — $7,088 a year, roughly double the hybrid — and insurance at $2,027.
How to read these figures
These are category averages across the sedans AAA includes in each group, not a single model pair. A specific hybrid compared against a specific petrol car will differ, sometimes considerably, and comparing across categories — a hybrid saloon against a petrol SUV, say — produces a number that says more about body style than about powertrain.
AAA’s model assumes 15,000 miles a year, a five-year ownership period and a new vehicle bought with a loan. Change any of those and the balance moves, fuel first and furthest.
And two categories are not broken out at this split, as set out above. The $477 is the published difference between two published totals; the four categories we can show account for $732 of it in the hybrid’s favour, with licence, registration, taxes and finance charges running roughly $255 the other way.
